Saamaka youth shares knowledge about governance and land rights with their villages

Suriname - 29 April, 2024

A group of young people from the Saamaka communities in Suriname have become more knowledgeable and interested in governance, leadership, and rights concerning their lands as a result of the efforts of the Association of Saamaka Communities (VSG) and Tropenbos Suriname. This interest was sparked after the youth participated in the regional exchange 'Gaan Kuutu' organized by Tropenbos International in Colombia in 2022, where they learned about governance issues from Colombia and Bolivia. This experience has led to an increased interest from the Saamaka youth in governance issues.

The youth have not only gained knowledge themselves but have also been actively sharing this knowledge with community members in the Upper Suriname area through various events since November 2022. Between 55 and 60 villages have participated in these knowledge-sharing events, helping to raise awareness and promote understanding within the community.

According to the Saamaka Youth, educating the community on these important issues is a gradual process, but they are starting to see progress as the message begins to resonate with people. This collaborative effort between the youth, VSG, and Tropenbos Suriname is playing a crucial role in empowering the Saamaka communities to advocate for the recognition of their lands and rights.
