Research on Forest Governance Monitoring in Viet Nam

Viet Nam - 01 November, 2011

Tropenbos International, in cooperation with FAO and the Wageningen UR Centre for Development Innovation, is implementing a pilot project on Forest Governance Monitoring (FGM) in Viet Nam. With support from MARD, the programme director (PD) of TBI Viet Nam and an independent expert from FAO organised several meetings at national and local level institutes and organizations.

The project is aimed at understanding the current situation of FGM at all levels in Viet Nam. Improving FGM will help promote sustainable forest management and the implementation of FLEGT and REDD.

As part of the research activities of the project, the research team went on field trips to collect relevant information and data about FGM through interviews and group discussions in Thua Thien Hue, Dak Lak and Gia Lai provinces. The PD of TBI Viet Nam made good use of the review meeting of the Forestry Network in the Central Highlands for presenting the above-mentioned project. At this meeting, useful and constructive feedback, in terms of involvement from organizations/institutes in the planning and decision-making process at all levels, was given by leaders from the forestry sector at the provincial level.

The information and data collected from the field trips and group discussions will serve as a basis for a workshop on FGM that will be held in Ha Noi at the end of 2011.
