Course on GIS and Remote Sensing for forest management

Course on GIS and Remote Sensing for forest management

Viet Nam - 01 November, 2011

In an effort to improve the capacity of individuals and organisations involved in forest resource management, TBI Viet Nam organised a course “Application of GIS and Remote sensing in Forest Management” on the 22nd of August 2011 in Hue. This event was a joint effort between TBI Viet Nam and the Center of Geo-Information Technology, University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City.

This activity was held under TBI’s capacity building component for its counterparts and relevant organisations, and was carried out based on local demands. The objective of the course was to equip participants with basic skills and knowledge of GIS and remote sensing for forest management.

Currently, several forest institutions and organisations in the North Central region, Thua Thien Hue in particular, set up necessary facilities for their daily assignments in information technology. However, most of the staff members lack the knowledge and practical skills to perform their tasks smoothly. The course met expectations of local policy makers and managers in terms of creating more adequate, strategic options for better management of the forests and environment, due to learning the benefits of higher accuracy and lower cost from GIS application and remote sensing technology.
